Cal was born as the second son of the prestigious dragon slayer Duke of Valm. He was born with great magical power, but the Holy Dragon King, fearing his power, cursed him, sealing him from casting spells. However, in order to overcome the curse, Cal taught himself to master the lost "Chantless Magic." On his 14th birthday, Cal told his father about it, but he was not believed and instead banished to a deserted island as a useless liar. By chance, Cal was picked up by the Dark Dragon King Altina, who was hiding on the island, and he realized that with "Chantless Magic" he could use "Dragon Magic" that humans cannot pronounce, and so he began his path to becoming the strongest.
