Habsburg-ke no Kareinaru Junan
Synopsis
Rudolf, head of the House of Habsburg, was elected as the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire for the first time in his family's history. How did a family that was originally just a poor lord on the Swiss frontier become Emperor?
—The Emperor. An authority standing alongside the Pope, the supreme power in Western Europe.
"...Why my father, of all people!?"
"...Hmm. I believe this is destiny."
"......"
"I haven't gone senile, you know."
—The time is the Middle Ages.
The Holy Roman Empire was in the midst of the "Great Interregnum," a period without an Emperor.
Disliking the chaos caused by the absence of an Emperor, Pope Gregory X issued a directive to the Imperial Princes:
"You must choose an Emperor by the unanimous consent of the seven Prince-Electors."
However, the major princes feared the reign of a "powerful Emperor." They schemed to install someone convenient for themselves.
"Should we look for a decent fellow from around here... I guess a lord from the southern area would be good."
"He needs to have a good relationship with the Church."
"He should have experience in governance and military service."
"He shouldn't have beef with anyone."
"And most importantly..."
" " "Someone who isn't too strong." " "
...Rudolf was chosen because he was viewed as "easy to handle"—not too strong, not too weak.
"Hooray for the big promotion!" "Father!!"
However, the Imperial Princes would eventually come to regret it.
"We chose a truly unbelievable man!" they would realize...
"The pacing is high-tempo and incredibly funny!"
"I used to struggle with world history, but I can read this!"
"I wish I had read this when I was in high school..."
